Youth injured in post-poll violence in Naogaon dies

A 25-year-old man who was critically injured in an attack by supporters of a defeated Upazila Parishad election candidate in Naogaon's Bodolgachhi, died in a Bogura hospital yesterday.

The deceased, Bidhan Chandra Orao, son of Gopal Chandra Orao of Chokabir village in Bodolgachhi, was a supporter of the Bilashbari union chairman-elect Shahinuzzaman Shahin.

As the name suggests, he was a member of the indigenous Oraon community.

Locals said Shahinuzzaman took out a celebratory procession in Enayetpur village with his supporters on Monday afternoon, after the UP election results were announced. Bidhan Chandra took part in the procession, which was reportedly attacked by defeated candidate Mizanur Rahman's men.

Several people who took part in the victory procession were injured in the attack, including Bidhan. They were sent to Naogaon Sadar Hospital for treatment.

Bidhan, however, had to be referred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura for more advanced treatment. But he succumbed to his injuries last evening, police disclosed.

Atikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Bodolgachhi Police Station, said legal action will be taken after an investigation in this regard.
