Voting in Cumilla's Lalmai upazila parishad polls starts
Voting in Cumilla's Lalmai upazila parishad election begun this morning amid tight security.
The voting began at 8:30am and will continue uninterrupted till 4:30pm today.
According to sources in the office of the upazila's returning officer, EVM machines are being used to cast votes at the upazila's 57 polling stations.
Three candidates are contesting for the post of chairman, five for the post of vice-chairman (two of whom have already withdrawn from the election), and four candidates for the post of female vice-chairman.
Rab, police, BGB, Ansar members, and mobile executive magistrates have been deployed in every polling station to avoid any type of violence, reports our local correspondent.
The total number of voters in this upazila is 1,57,217. Of them, 79,574 are male voters and 77,643 are female voters.
A large number of voters were seen in the Folkamuri centre of Shilmuri Dakshin union in the morning.
Meanwhile, voter turnout at the Jamua High School was very low. Saiful Islam, presiding officer of the centre, said out of a total 4,655 voters, 2 percent or 80 votes were cast in the first 90 minutes.
No voter was seen till 9:10am at the Alishwar centre of the upazila. Mohiuddin Akash, a local journalist, told The Daily Star that he did not see any voters coming to the polling station even after waiting for 40 minutes.
