The electoral system has been destroyed
Gonoforum President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday suggested creating the foundation of an independent and neutral election to overcome the country's political crisis.
Speaking at a press conference, he also slammed the Election Commission (EC) for its decision to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) in polls, ignoring the opinions of most opposition parties.
The veteran politician said greed for money and power has stricken current politics with a terrible disease. "A healthy form of politics, free from this disease, can fulfil the people's aspirations."
"We can't allow the current state of uncertainty to continue. I call upon all conscious citizens, all civic and women's organisations, students, workers, doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, journalists, and other professionals, to demand forming a structure for free and fair polls to resolve the crisis," he said.
Dr Kamal said the electoral system has been destroyed and put into question through the EC's move to use EVMs in the upcoming national election. "The nation wants to get rid of the destroyed electoral system. We all must protect the country with our united efforts."
Dr Kamal said, "I am old now. The time has come for me to retire from politics. Still the leaders requested me to come here. That's why I did. I have taken this opportunity to tell you that this country must be protected."
Gonoforum arranged the press conference at Jatiya Press Club on the country's overall situation.
NEW COMMITTEE OF GONOFORUM
At the press conference, a 101-member, full-fledged committee of Gonoforum was announced, with Dr Kamal Hossain as president and Mizanur Rahman the new general secretary.
Around two years after Gonoforum split, the new committee was announced.
Mizanur Rahman, a new face and less known in politics, has been elected this time.
In the press conference, Mizanur Rahan revealed the names of the 17-member president council, treasurer, joint general secretary, organisational secretary, 13-member praesidium member, eight-member permanent council and 37-member central executive council.
Gonoforum was formed in 1993 under the leadership of Kamal Hossain, who left the Awami League, and Saifuddin Ahmed Manik, who left the Communist Party of Bangladesh.
Kamal Hossain has been the president of this party since then. When Manik died, Mostafa Mohsin Montu, a former leader of Awami Jubo League was made general secretary of Gonoforum.
After the party's fifth council in 2020, Kamal replaced his long-time general secretary Mostafa Mohsin Montu with Reza Kibria in the post.
Then came the expulsion and counter-expulsion between the two factions of Gonoforum.
In the meantime, Reza Kibria left the party but the dispute did not stop in the party.
In 2021, a new committee of Gonoforum was formed through a council with Montu and Subrata Chowdury as president and general secretary of the party.
Dr Kamal was not present at the council.
About the new committee, Dr Kamal yesterday said, they will make the party organized and stronger through holding complete council of Gonoforum.
