Taking away ballot unit of EVM: No arrest in 48 hours
Police are yet to arrest the accused in a case filed over taking away a ballot unit of EVM outside a poling centre at Chattogram's Boalkhali upazila parishad by-polls held on Thursday.
The Election Commission filed the case early yesterday against a Jubo League leader for taking away the ballot unit of EVM outside Jaysthapura Ramani Mohan High School polling centre at Sripur-Kharandwip union on the day of the by-polls of Boalkhali Upazila Parishad for the post of chairman.
Presiding Officer of the poling centre Sajal Das filed the case against Jubo League leader Nirmalendu Dey Sumon with Boalkhali Police Station on charges of stealing the ballot unit of EVM machine from the centre, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Nirmalendu is the joint convener of Sripur union unit of Jubo League.
According to case statement, Jubo League leader Nirmalendu Dey "ran away" with the EVM ballot unit from the polling centre on Thursday afternoon during the by-polls. Later, Ratan Chowdhury, president of AL Jayshtapura union unit, collected it and returned it to the centre. At this time, journalists took pictures.
Contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Boalkhali Police Station Abdur Razzak said police were trying to arrest the accused.
"We have been conducting drives to arrest the accused," said the OC.
Contacted, returning officer of the by-polls and Chattogram District Election officer Jahangir Hossain said the EC has filed a case and it is the responsibility of police to arrest the accused.
