Rangpur city polls tomorrow: distribution of voting equipment begins

The returning officer started distribution of voting equipment this morning, a day ahead of the Rangpur City Corporation (RCC) election.

Electronic voting machines (EVMs) will be used for voting at 229 polling stations. The voting will begin from 8:00am tomorrow.

Police personnel of different ranges of Rangpur and Rajshahi along with ansar members gathered on the ground of Rangpur Police Line to receive the voting equipment in the morning.

The programme was presided over by Rangpur Range DIG Noor-e-Alam Miah, reports our Dinajpur correspondent.

While addressing the gathering, Returning Officer Abdul Baten said everything related to the city corporation elections has been done peacefully so far. The election will be held in a peaceful manner, he hopes.

The returning official also urged the police personnel to extend their sincere cooperation to make this election a success, he said, "We have faith in you. I firmly believe that all of you all will perform your duties sincerely in this election."

He also warned that rule violators will not be spared.

In his speech, DIG Noor-e-Alam asked everyone to perform their duties in accordance with the election rules.

EVMs will be supplied to all the centres by this afternoon.

Nine individuals are running for mayor, including ruling Awami League nominee Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia and Jatiya Party nominee Mostafizar Rahman. AL leader Latifur Rahman is running as an independent. The BNP boycotted the election. Besides, 251 people are running for the 44 councillor posts, according to EC.

The total number of voters in Rangpur City Corporation is 4,26,470.
