Rangpur City polls: JP mayoral candidate wins for 2nd term
Jatiya Party-backed candidate Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa has won the mayoral race unofficially in the Rangpur City Corporation elections.
Mostafa, under the symbol "plough", secured 146,798 votes defeating his nearest Bangladesh Islami Andolon candidate Amiruzzaman Pial, who secured 49,892 votes under the "hand fan" symbol, according to the voting results of 229 centres announced by Returning Officer Abdul Baten.
The returning officer announced the polls results from the Rangpur Shilpakala Academy, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
Menawhile, independent mayoral candidate Md Latifur Rahman Milan bagged 33,833 votes while Awami League-backed mayoral candidate Adv Hosne Ara Lutfa Dalia got 22,306 votes.
The Voting began at 8:00am. However, due to technical errors and delay in identifying the fingerprints of the voters, the voting ended in the evening in many centres.
There are 426,470 voters in the Rangpur City Corporation elections and the voter turnouts was 65.91 percent.
A total of nine candidates vied for the mayoral post, 183 for councillor posts and 68 for the post of reserved seats for women councillors. The election was held using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at 229 centres under 33 wards.
