Pre-polls violence in Kurigram: Injured man dies
A man died last night at home, a day after he was injured in violence over the upcoming union parishad election in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram.
The man was identified as Babul Miah, supporter of Mukul Miah -- a member candidate of Bhangamor union under Phulbari upazila, reports our Lalmonirhat correspondent quoting Rajib Kumar Roy, officer-in-charge (OC) of Phulbari Police Station.
According to police and locals, a clash occurred between supporters of Mukul Miah and Shahjalal, another member candidate of Bhangamor union, at Battala area on the night of November 22 where Babul Miah got injured.
He was treated at a local clinic and released on the night of November 23, OC Rajib said, adding that he died hours after he was taken to home.
Following the death, locals and family members demonstrated by blocking the Phulbari-Nageshwari road at Battala area for about two hours -- halting vehicular movement on both sides of the road, said Md Sumon Reza, assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Nageshwari Circle.
Later, the ASP, Executive Magistrate Bimal Chakma, Inspector (Investigation) Sarwar Parvez of Phulbari Police Station along with a police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, added the police officer.
Police recovered the body of the deceased and sent it to Kurigram Hospital morgue for autopsy.
"For being the supporter of member candidate Mukul Miah, my husband was beaten to death by the supporters of rival candidate Shahjalal," said the deceased's wife Mamata Begum, demanding justice for the killing.
Terming the deceased as his follower, member candidate Mukul Miah said he had lodged a written complaint with Phulbari Police Station on Tuesday morning over the pre-polls violence.
Meanwhile, Shahjalal also claimed that the deceased Babul Miah was his supporter. He said he had also filed a written complaint with Phulbari police station on Tuesday in this regard.
Family members of the deceased were preparing to file a case in connection with the murder, said the ASP.
The ASP added that they were investigating the incident.
Additional police forces were deployed in the area to stop any unwanted incident centring the union parishad election.
