UP polls violence: 2 policemen injured, 5 vehicles vandalised in Shariatpur
Miscreants yesterday attacked a polling centre of the sixth phase of Union Parishad elections at the Chikandi union at the Sadar upazila of Shariatpur.
The incident happened at the Bagadi Government Primary School centre around 5:30 pm, soon after the election results of the centre came out, reports our Shariatpur correspondent quoting Election Presiding Officer Imam Hossain.
"During the attack, the assailants set ablaze three motorcycles and a pickup van and threw another motorcycle into the water after damaging it," said Imam.
Two policemen --Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain and Constable Shariful Islam --were injured when they tried to resist the attackers, added the presiding said.
As soon as the results were announced, a group of miscreants started hurling crude bombs towards the centre, said the presiding officer.
Later, members of the police, Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion brought the situation under control, he added.
"There are allegations that supporters of defeated member candidate Hafiz Uddin carried out the attack," said Mohammad Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge Palong Model Police Station.
"Hafiz is absconding since the attack. The matter is being investigated," he said
Besides, two people have been detained in connection with the attack, he added.
