UP polls: Independent candidates fared well in 3rd phase, says EC
Independent candidates have fared well in the third phase of the union parishad elections, compared to the previous two phases.
About 45 percent of independent candidates won chairman posts during the third phase UP elections held yesterday. In the second phase, it was 40 percent while 24 percent in the first phase, according to an Election Commission data unveiled tonight.
In the data, EC announced unofficial results of 992 unions.
According to the EC statistics, in Sunday's election, AL-backed chairman candidates won in 525 unions. Of them, 99 were elected unopposed.
At the same time, independent candidates won in 446 unions, with only one elected unopposed.
According to party insiders, most independent candidates are AL rebels.
Also, 17 Jatiya Party candidates, one each from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Workers Party of Bangladesh, Jamiate Ulamaye Islam Bangladesh and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, won the third phase elections.
Elections were held in a total of 1,000 unions yesterday.
Earlier, the EC had announced elections to 1,008 unions. But polls in seven unions were postponed due to cases filed and results of another nine unions were withheld due to different reasons, said an EC joint secretary.
Elections to 833 unions were held on November 11 and 364 on June 21 and September 20.
