One mayor, 7 councillor candidates get back candidacy
One independent mayor candidate and seven councillor candidates of Sylhet City Corporation polls, whose nominations were initially cancelled for breaching electoral code, got their candidacies back.
However, two more independent mayor candidates -- Md Abdul Mannan Khan and Jahid Uddin Chowdhury -- and two councillor candidates' appeals were dismissed.
After hearing the appeals on Tuesday, Sylhet Divisional Commissioner Dr Muhammad Mosharrof Hossain decided on the nominations, confirmed Jakariya, additional divisional commissioner (revenue) and director of local government.
The mayor candidate Md Shahjahan Miah regained his candidacy.
Councillor candidates of reserved women's seats -- Shyamali Sarkar, Tahmina Begum and Kamrun Nahar Chowdhury – got their candidacies back.
Of the regular councillor candidates, Md Fakhrul Islam, Abu Sadek Mohammad Khairul Islam Chowdhury, Md Rafiqul Islam and Md Shahab Uddin regained their candidacies.
SCC polls is slated for June 21. Nominations of candidates were received by May 23 and selection from the nominations was completed on May 25.
Candidates will start campaigning after symbol distribution on June 2.
