KCC polls: 195 including 7 mayoral candidates submit nominations
A total of 195 candidates, including seven for the mayoral post, submitted nomination papers for the upcoming Khulna City Corporation election.
Md Alauddin, returning officer of KCC, confirmed the matter.
Today was the last day for filing nomination papers for the KCC polls, according to the Election Commission office.
Thirty-nine nominations were submitted for the 10 reserved seats of women councillors, while 149 candidates submitted nomination papers for councillor posts in 31 wards.
Those who have so far submitted nomination papers for the mayoral post are: Jatiya Party candidate Md Shafiqul Islam Madhu, former KCC mayor and Awami League candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Maulana Abdul Awal, Jaker Party candidate SM Sabbir Hossain, independent candidates AL Amin Md Abdullah Chouwdhury, SM Shafiqur Rahman, and Syed Kamrul Islam.
While submitting the nomination papers today, former mayor Talukdar Abdul Khaleque told reporters that the voters are eagerly waiting for a fair election. He expressed optimism that the upcoming election will go well.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 25 and symbols will be allotted on May 26.
A total of 5,35,528 voters under 31 wards of the KCC are expected to cast their votes on June 12 from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
