Ritu first transgender UP chairman in Bangladesh
A member of the transgender community, an independent candidate, has been elected as the chairman at Trilochanpur union of Kaliganj in Jhenaidah, during the third phase of the union parishad (UP) election today.
Nazrul Islam Ritu, was elected as a chairman of Trilochanpur Union Parishad-6 in Jhenaidah's Kaliganj upazila with her electoral symbol pineapple, reports our Jhenaidah correspondent quoting the presiding officer of Ward No 10.
Ritu bagged 9,569 votes while her rival, Awami League-backed candidate Nazrul Islam Sana, got 4,517 votes, added the presiding officer.
Ritu (43), had become a topic of conversation in Jhenaidah while running for this candidacy as the UP chairman.
She stays in Dhaka's Demra area, but frequently comes to Jhenaidah to maintain a strong relationship with the people of Trilochanpur.
With hard-earned money, Ritu has commissioned two mosques in ancestral village Daudpur and provides financial assistance to local temples and the poor.
Ritu comes from a family of AL supporters, according to Shakil and Sagar Hossain of Baliadanga village. For contributions and work for the locals, Ritu was already a favourite.
Pinki Khatun, another transgender individual, had previously been elected vice chairman of Kotchandpur upazila in Jhenaidah.
Earlier, on November 13, Shahida Begum became the first transgender person to get elected as member of Maguraghona Union Parishad-6 in Khulna district.
