Contempt of court petition filed against CEC
Contempt of court petition was filed at the High Court today against Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda for not registering Ganasamhati Andolon as a political party around three years after this court has directed to do so.
Ganasamhati Andolon's Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki submitted the petition to the office concerned through lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua, saying that CEC Nurul Huda, who is scheduled to retire on February 14, has violated the HC directive, which amounts to contempt of court.
In the petition, he prayed to the HC to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the CEC for defying its directive.
The HC may hear the petition on Sunday, lawyer Jyotirmoy told The Daily Star.
He said following a writ petition, the HC on April 11, 2019, had directed the Election Commission led by CEC Nurul Huda to register Ganasamhati Andolon as a political party in 30 days after receiving the copy of the HC verdict.
The copy of the HC verdict was submitted to the EC and the commission has not registered Ganasamhati Andolon as a political party yet, he added.
