Case filed over Shariatpur UP polls violence
A case has been filed against 27 persons including two defeated Union Parishad member candidates for launching an attack at polling centres and setting fire on vehicles during the Chikandi union parishad elections under Shariatpur Sadar upazila yesterday.
Presiding Officer Imam Hossain filed the case with Palong Model Police Station naming 27 persons including defeated UP members Hafiz Uddin and Dolu Madbar, reports our local correspondent quoting Md Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of the police facility.
Meanwhile, a Shariatpur court today sent Dolu Madbar and his associate Azibor Rahman to jail. The duo was arrested last night over the incident.
On January 31, a cocktail exploded at a Bogadi Government Primary School polling centre when votes were being counted. The attackers also set fire to four vehicles of presiding officers, and a pick-up van used to carry election equipment.
Two police personnel were also injured when police tried to stop the attackers, the OC said, adding that police had to fire ten rounds of blanks to bring the situation under control.
The presiding officer said the attack was carried out by defeated member candidates Hafiz Uddin, Dolu Madbar, and their supporters.
