AL candidate wins Tangail-7 by-polls unofficially
Ruling Awami League candidate Khan Ahmed Shuvo has won the by-elections in Tangail (Mirzapur) constituency.
Returning officer Shahdunnabi Chowdhury announced the voting result unofficially this evening.
According to the result, Shuvo secured 1,04,059 votes from 121 centres from the "boat" symbol, and Jatiya Party candidate Jahirul Islam Jahir got 16,773 votes.
The Tangail-7 by-polls saw a low voter turnout with only 35 percent votes cast, Assistant Returning Officer Kamrul Hasan said when the voting ended, reports out Tangail correspondent.
The voting using electronic voting machines (EVMs) started at 8:00 am in 121 centres of the constituency and ended at 4:00 pm.
No untoward incident occurred during the election, reports our correspondent.
Jatiya Party nominated candidate Jahirul Islam Jahir however, alleged that his polling agents were driven out from many polling centres.
The parliamentary seat became vacant after the death of AL lawmaker Ekabbar Hossain on November 16.
Earlier in the day, Returning Officer Shahedunnabi Chowdhury said he visited several polling centres and found a low presence of the voters.
The five candidates contesting in the by-polls are Khan Ahmed Shuvo (Awami League), Jahirul Islam Jahir (Jatiya Party), Golam Nawjab Chowdhury Power (Bangladesh Workers' Party), Rupa Roy Chowdhury (Bangladesh Congress Party), and independent Nurul Islam.
BNP did not take part in the by-polls.
