Padma Bridge example of Bangladesh’s leadership in promoting South Asian connectivity: US embassy
The US has congratulated Bangladesh on the momentous occasion marking the opening of Padma Bridge tomorrow.
The US embassy in a statement issued today said Padma Bridge is another example of Bangladesh's leadership in promoting regional connectivity in South Asia. It will create important national and regional connectivity and boost commerce and improve the quality of life.
The US Embassy statement also said "The United States congratulates Bangladesh on the momentous opening of the Padma Bridge."
Building sustainable transport infrastructure to connect people and goods efficiently is important for fostering inclusive economic growth and "The Padma Bridge will create new and important linkages within Bangladesh, boosting commerce and improving the quality of life."
Padma Bridge, the first multibillion dollar mega project constructed by self-funding, will connect the country's south and southwestern Bangladesh to Dhaka and the rest of the country.
The bridge is projected to increase the country's GDP by 1.23 percent as the economic activity in the country's south and southwestern region will be augmented and the supply chain will improve.
For the people of the southern region, the opening of the bridge is an emotional moment as they have faced immense hassle while crossing the Padma river via launch or ferries.
The country's tourism sector is also likely to experience a boost with the improved transport system in the days to come, with the travel time from Dhaka to Kuakata and Sundarbans coming down significantly.
