BGB-BGP meeting begins in Myanmar
The eighth high-level border conference between Border Guard Bangladesh and Myanmar's Border Guard Police began in Naypyitaw of Myanmar today.
BGB will discuss with its Myanmar counterpart the de-escalation of border tensions caused by internal conflict in Myanmar and the violation of Bangladesh airspace by the neighbouring country.
Preventing the smuggling of yaba, crystal meth, and other drugs as well as the repatriation of forcefully displaced Myanmar citizens sheltered in Bangladesh will get top priority in the five-day conference, said sources in the BGB.
It will also be discussed at the conference how to improve cooperation to ensure security, prevent illegal infiltration, combat inter-state terrorism, prevent the activities of cross-border criminal gangs and hold joint patrols and regular coordination meetings.
A 10-member team from Bangladesh led by BGB Major General Shakil Ahmed is participating in the conference, according to a BGB press release.
On the other hand, a 15-member delegation led by Police Major General Aung Naing Thu is representing the Myanmar side.
