Woman tortured in Chandpur over alleged theft
A woman was tortured brutally in Chandpur's Faridganj upazila over allegation of stealing a gold chain. Police have arrested two persons in this connection.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon in Rustompur village under the upazila. Police lodged a case in this connection with written complaint from the victim's family after a video of the incident went viral on social media and came to the notice of the law enforcers, reports our correspondent quoting police sources.
The victim, Taslima Begum (26), of the village, is now undergoing treatment at Chandpur General Hospital.
"A few days back, a gold chain belonging to the wife of Kausar Alam, son of Mostofa Mia, a neighbour, was lost. It was later found. However, they alleged Taslima of stealing the chain, and on Friday afternoon beat her over this allegation," Taslima's elder sister Amena Begum told The Daily Star.
"Mostofa Mia's wife Shamsunnahar and sons Yasin and Mofasser alleged that Taslima had stolen the chain, and beat her up with a cane. Two neighbours also sustained injuries as they tried to save Taslima," Amena said.
One witness recorded video of the incident and shared it on Facebook, which came to the notice of Milon Mahmud, superintendent of police in Chandpur. He later visited the victim and lodged a case under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act with her written complaint on Sunday, police said.
Yasin Hossain (21), Mofasser Hossain (25), and their mother Shamsunnahar were shown accused in the case. Police arrested Yasin and Mofasser and presented them before a Chandpur court at noon today, said Shahid Hossain, officer-in-charge of Faridganj Police Station.
