Woman arrested over torturing youth for marrying her daughter
Police today arrested a woman in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon in a case filed over torturing a youth for marrying her 17-year-old daughter without her consent.
The torture took place on Monday afternoon, but police took action after a video of the incident went viral on Facebook.
The arrestee is Salina Akhter, 33, wife of Karimul Haque of Bhangbari village, our Thakurgaon correspondent reports.
Officer-in-Charge of Ranisankail Police Station SM Jahid Iqbal said the victim's father, Khalilur Rahman of the same village, filed a case accusing Karimul Haque, Salina, their son, and one of their relatives.
A drive is on to nab the other accused, the OC said.
According to the villagers, Nasirul Islam, 20, and the 17-year-old daughter of Karimul and Salina got married on September 9 in Thakurgaon without the consent of their parents and went to Narayanganj.
Later, the girl's parents asked them to return home, giving assurances that they would accept the union.
The couple returned to the village on September 14 and stayed separately with their respective parents.
When Nasirul went to visit the girl's house, her parents with the help of relatives tied him up to a tree and beat him with bamboo sticks for one-and-a-half hours.
Police went to the spot, rescued him and brought him to Ranisankail upazila health complex. After receiving primary treatment, he was shifted to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital where he is undergoing treatment now.
In the video, Salina was seen hitting Nasirul with a bamboo stick in front of a number of villagers despite the victim repeatedly asking for forgiveness.
