Two drug traders killed in Cox’s Bazar shootouts, BGB says
Two alleged drug traders were killed in separate "shootouts" with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Cox's Bazar district early today.
One of the dead -- killed in Ukhiya upazila -- was identified as Mohammad Shahjahan (27), while identity of the other man, aged between 25 and 30 -- killed in Teknaf -- could not be known immediately.
BGB officials said both were drug peddlers.
The shootout in Ukhiya took place at Tulatui Jaliler Goda bridge area when BGB men took position on receiving information that a big consignment of yaba from Myanmar will enter Bangladesh, Lt Col Ali Haider Azad Ahmed, commander of Cox's Bazar 34 Battalion of BGB, told our Cox's Bazar Correspondent.
When a gang four to five persons were entering Bangladesh through the border around 4:00am, the BGB men signaled them to stop. But the intruders opened fire at them, forcing them to retaliate and triggering a "gunfight", leaving Shahjahan with bullet wounds, he claimed.
Doctors declared him dead after Shahjahan was rushed to Ukhiya Health complex. He was accused in at least 10 cases, the BGB official said.
BGB claimed to have recovered 50,000 pieces of yaba and a firearm from the spot.
Lt Col Faisal Hasan Khan, commander of Cox's Bazar 2 Battalion of BGB, came up with almost identical version while describing the "shootout" at Teknaf's Damdamia Natural Park area.
The BGB official said three drug peddlers were swimming in the Naf river towards Bangladesh. One of them was declared dead after he was taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex with bullet wounds, following a "shootout" while two others fled to Myanmar.
He claimed that they recovered 3.40 lakh pieces of yaba and a firearm from the spot.
Both the bodies were sent to the district Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
