Teen rape victim dies by suicide
A gang-rape victim died by suicide in Pekua upazila of Cox's Bazar early yesterday.
The dead is Tabassum Jannat Rekha Moni, 14, of the upazil's Hazirpara village. She was a student of grade VIII at a local madrasa.
The victim's father Ayub Ali filed a rape case against three local youths -- Alamgir, Robi Alam and Abul Kashem. Police, however, recorded an unnatural death case later.
According to the father, he and his wife went to visit a relative's house on Friday, keeping Rekha and her sibling Rashel at home.
Taking the chance, the trio intruded into their house, took Rekha to an abandoned place and gang-raped her, he added.
Hearing her scream, locals rushed to the spot and rescued her. The criminals fled the scene, he further said.
The rescuers took the girl to her home where she took poison around 2:00am.
She was rushed to a local hospital where she was declared dead, he said.
Contacted, Kanan Sarkar, inspector (investigation) of Pekua Police Station, said a case was filed in this connection and necessary legal actions would be taken against the accused.
Talking to The Daily Star, local union parishad member Nezam Uddin said the accused persons used to stalk the girl on her way back home from the madrasa.
