The National Human Rights Commission today (June 28, 2022) asked authorities concerned to take legal steps against the policemen, who played silent role during the incident of putting garlands of shoes around the neck of a college teacher in Narail on June 17.

The NHRC also asked the Home Ministry's Public Security Division to submit report before it by August 29 after investigating into the inaction of the police during the incident.

In a statement, signed by NHRC Chairman Nasima Begum, also directed the Khulna divisional commissioner to send a report to the commission after investigating the incident.

"In a country of communal harmony, the incident of forcibly putting garland of shoes around a teacher's neck, following an allegation of blasphemy, is unacceptable," the statement said issued today.

Such incident tarnished the human dignity of a person. At the same time, the incident was occurred in presence of police officials. It was unclear how such an unfortunate incident happened in front of them, the statement read.

On June 17, students and locals forced Swapan Kumar Biswas, acting principal of Mirzapur United College, to wear a garland of shoes around his neck in Narail Sadar Upazila.

The incident came to light after a video of the teacher being forced to wear a garland of shoes around his neck went viral on social media.
