A Jashore court yesterday sent a man to jail for raping a 15-year-old schoolgirl in the district town.

Shahriar Sujan, 23, a resident of Pandit Pukur Par area of the town, was arrested early yesterday, said AKM Shafiqul Alam Chowdhury, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Jashore Kotwali Police Station.

According to the victim's statement, the accused, who is an acquaintance, on Wednesday evening promised to drop her home on his motorbike from in front of Jashore General Hospital, where she had gone to visit a relative. Instead of dropping her home, he took her to his house and raped her. He also beat her up when she resisted.

Finding her way out of the house, the victim rushed to the police station the next morning and informed them about the incident.

The police accompanied her to the location and arrested Sujan.

Following the arrest, the victim was sent for a medical examination while her mother filed a case with the station.
