Rohingya sub majhi hacked to death in Cox’s Bazar

A Rohingya community leader was hacked to death by unidentified criminals in the Ukhiya refugee camp of Cox's Bazar district today.
The victim, Mohammad Ayub, 35, was a sub majhi (community leader) and resident of H 56 Block of Camp 18 (Ghonarpara), reports our Cox's Bazar staff correspondent quoting police.
The incident took place in front of Codek School in the camp around 5:00pm, said Sheikh Mohammad Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station.
Mohammad Ali said some 10 to 12 unidentified criminals attacked him with sharp weapons while the Rohingya leader was talking with some people.
They hacked Ayub indiscriminately and ran away immediately, said the OC.
Law enforcers on duty went to the spot and rescued him and took him to a local NGO-run hospital, where doctors declared him dead, said the police official.
The OC also said, "The motive behind the murder is yet to be known. Initially, police suspect that the incident took place to establish supremacy in the camp. Ayub was involved in activities against the Rohingya militant outfit ARSA. He could be killed for this reason."
The body was sent to Cox's Bazar General Hospital Morgue for autopsy, he said.
