Rab arrests sacked AL leader Helena
Rab last night arrested businessperson-turned-politician Helena Jahangir, who was recently sacked from the Awami League sub-committee on women's affairs over her controversial posts on Facebook.
A team of the elite force started raiding her Gulshan house around 8:00pm and came out along with her around 12:15am today. She was then taken to the Rab headquarters.
"We conducted the drive based on some specific information. We recovered foreign liquor, walkie-talkies, foreign currency, casino items and deer hide from her house," Rab Executive Magistrate Palash Kumar Bosu said at a press briefing on the spot.
"We have arrested her for further interrogation. We will share the details with the media after the quizzing," he said.
The executive magistrate did not take any further questions from reporters.
As the Rab team was taking Helena out of her house, she was seen laughing and waiving at the journalists.
She came into the limelight recently after making an announcement on Facebook that "Awami Chakrijibi League" was formed and that she was its president. She also announced that the organisation would pick presidents and general secretaries for its units in districts, upazilas and even outside the country.
The Facebook post went viral.
On July 25, Meher Afroz Chumki, AL women affairs secretary, issued a press release stating that Helena was fired from the AL sub-committee for "breaching party polices" as her name surfaced on the social media as the president of "Bangladesh Awami Chakrijibi League."
Helena, the founder and CEO of Jayayatra Television, became a member of the sub-committee on January 18, said AL sources.
Earlier, she had become a member of the advisory council of Cumilla (north) unit of the ruling party, the sources added.
