Pregnant woman dies due to ‘careless operation’ in Mymensingh, family claims

A pregnant woman with twins died due to a "careless operation" while removing stone from her kidney at a private hospital in Mymensingh early today, according to the family.
The deceased, Rekha Akhter, 25, wife of Mahbubul Alam of the district's Trishal upazila, was a 13-week pregnant with twins, our Mymensingh correspondent reports, quoting police and family.
The incident took place around 1:00am at the Patient Care Hospital located in Brahmapalli area of Mymensingh city, said police.
Meanwhile, the victim's husband Mahbul Alam filed a complaint against six people with Kotwali Model Police Station tonight, said Shah Kamal Akand, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Hospital Managing Director Rafiqul Islam and physicians Dr Arif and Dr Md Ashraful were among those named in complaint, the OC said.
Quoting the complaint, the OC said Rekha was taken to Patient Care Hospital last night after she was diagnosed with kidney stone recently.
After examination, the hospital authorities confirmed that she will not face any problem if the stone operation could be done. Finally, Rekha underwent the kidney stone surgery at 1:00am today.
Taking to reporters, Rekha's husband Mahbul said as the physical condition of his wife deteriorated around 3:00am, the hospital nurses took her to the CBMCB Hospital where doctor declared her dead.
After the matter came to light this morning, the authorities, officials and employees fled locking the hospital.
The pregnant woman died due to a "careless operation", OC Shah Kamal further said quoting the complaint.
Police launched the investigation into the incident, the police official added.
Meanwhile, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue.
Rafiqul Islam, managing director of Patient Care Hospital, told the correspondent over phone that he is now in Dhaka. He doesn't know who performed the operation.
He will be able to brief the details after he comes back to Mymensingh, added Rafiqul.
