Posing as health official, JnU student scams dental college admission seeker
Detectives arrested a student of Jagannath University from Dhaka's Gendaria area on Sunday on charges swindling an admission seeker -- promising to get her enrolled in a dental college.
Abu Musa Asari (21), a fourth year student of Film and Television Department at JnU, posed as a health department official to commit the fraudulence, said Ashraf Hossain, deputy commissioner of (DB) Wari Division.
Two fake identity cards of the University Grants Commission, several fake NID cards and copies of students' admit cards were seized from his possession.
Ashraf said the exam taken by the candidate, held on October 10, did not go well and she found Musa on October 12 on Facebook when the results were published.
Identifying as a senior official of the health department, Musa pretended to check her roll number and said she actually got the chance to enrol but his senior colleagues gave the placement to another candidate through irregularities.
He demanded Tk 10 lakh to get her enrolled in a dental college. As the candidate said she did not have that much money, Musa asked her to give Tk two lakh then and rest after getting admission.
Musa sent photos of fake ID of an assistant secretary of University Grants Commission and screenshots of him chatting with important persons to her Imo ID, to further convince her, detectives said.
The police official said that the screenshots were fake.
Convinced, the candidate met Musa in Jatrabari area and gave him Tk two lakh. As she called him the next day for result, Musa demanded Tk one lakh more, saying that he needed to pay high-ups.
The girl became suspicious as Musa kept calling her for money -- threatening that he would not allow her to get enrolled anywhere, if she didn't pay up.
Then, her father filed a case with Jatrabari Police Station on Saturday in this connection.
"He has embezzled a hefty amount of money by swindling several candidates," DC Ashraf told The Daily Star.
GS Mostafa, Musa's elder brother, said that he was out of reach since he last contacted him (Musa) on Thursday and filed a general diary with Gendaria Police Station on Sunday.
Today, a DB official informed him over the phone that his brother was arrested in a fraud case, he told The Daily Star.
