Police on high alert ahead of National Mourning Day: DMP chief
Police are on high alert ahead of National Mourning Day programmes in Dhanmondi tomorrow, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam said today.
"The main aim of militant groups now is to draw attention of international media. An explosion, even two kilometres away from the site, will draw international attention," he told reporters after assessing security measures at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum premises at Dhanmondi.
He said that law enforcers are being extremely vigilant and recently caught an entire group that made powerful bombs.
Replying to a query, the DMP chief said that a group of Bangladeshis have left the country for Afghanistan, responding to a recent call to fight for Taliban there.
"We suspect, some of them were caught in India while some are trying to reach Afghanistan through various ways," he said.
The DMP commissioner said they would not allow anyone without face mask to enter the Memorial Museum to pay homage.
He urged all to maintain health safety rules and leave immediately after paying homage.
Every year, the nation observes the National Mourning Day on August 15, a public holiday.
On this day in 1975, the Father of the Nation along with most of his family members, was assassinated by a section of disgruntled army personnel. His two daughters -- Sheikh Hasina, now the prime minister, and Sheikh Rehana -- were safe as they were abroad.
