Police detain seven over attack on Hero Alom

The law enforcers have so far detained seven people over the attack on independent candidate Ashraful Alom alias Hero Alom during yesterday's Dhaka-17 by-polls.
"It [attack on Hero Alom] is a stray incident. We have so far detained seven persons," Harun Or Rashid, chief of Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told reporters at a press conference at the DMP media centre today.
The detectives are trying to identify and detain others involved in the attack, he said, adding that police are waiting for Helo Alom or his representative to file a case in this regard.
"A team of police was sent to the Hero Alom's office … As they reached there, he left the office. Police are waiting there," he said.
The political identity of the attackers will not be taken into account, he said in reply to a query.
Harun said voting took place at every centre in a peaceful and fair manner. Hero Alom had moved to every centre without any obstacles. But the stray incident took place within four to five minutes.
The DB chief also said they will investigate whether the perpetrators tried to put the election in question through the attack.
Replying to a query about whether Hero Alam initiated the incident, Harun said they would investigate it.
