Police charge baton as E-orange customers try to block road in Dhaka
Police charged batons on customers of e-commerce platform E-orange after the latter tried to block the road near Matsya Bhaban in Dhaka this morning, demanding reimbursement of their money and exemplary punishment of those involved in the swindle.
Protestors claimed that at least 10 of them were injured.
Witnesses said several hundred E-orange customers started gathering in front of Jatiya Press Club around 11:00 am, to realise their 10 demands, including steps to ensure immediate extradition of suspended Inspector Sohel Rana from India, confiscation of his wealth, and reimbursement of money.
They said the commerce ministry should take responsibility as many e-commerce institutions swindled crores of money across the country.
After the protest at Press Club, they brought out a procession towards Matsya Bhaban where police took action upon protestors, who attempted to block the road, they said.
Moudud Hawlader, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, said they dispersed the E-orange customers as they tried to block the busy road.
The OC said none were detained from the spot. Protesters, however, claimed that two of them were picked up by law enforcers.
On August 17, customers filed a case against the owners and staff of e-commerce platform E-orange for reportedly embezzling around Tk 1,100 crore and not delivering their products.
E-orange owner Sonia Mehjabin, her husband Masukur Rahman, and some others are now behind bars.
Besides, India's Border Security Force (BSF) detained Sonia's brother and suspended Banani Police Station Inspector (Investigation), Sohel from Changrabandha border area in Cooch Behar district.
Police are trying to extradite him to Bangladesh.
