Police arrest wrong person, actual accused secured bail

Police arrested a joint convener of Swechchhasebak Dal's Narsingdi unit as his name was similar to the accused of a case filed under the Explosive Substances Act.

Police arrested Rubel Mia, 26, son of Khorshed Mia of Alokbali Union of Narsingdi Sadar whereas the actual accused is Rubel Mia of Baduarchar area who secured bail in the case.

Expelled leader of Jatiyatabadi Chattra Dal's (JCD) Narsingdi District unit Fahim Raj Ovi filed the case with Shibpur Police Station accusing BNP's joint secretary general Khairul Kabir Khokon. In the case Fahim named 18 including Rubel and 25-30 unnamed persons of attacking him and others on February 12.

Detective Branch of police picked up Rubel of Alokbali union on February 13. He was later handed over to Shibpur Police Station, reports our Narsingdi correspondent.

Victim's father Khorshed Mia told The Daily Star that his son was arrested due to mistake by police. "I went to the police station and requested the OC to release my son but they refused," he said.

"If my son is accused, then why would the other Rubel secure interim bail in the same case," he said.

Contacted, plaintiff of the case Fahim said he went to the police station when he learnt that police arrested the wrong person. "Seniors are looking after the matter, I can't say anything more," he added.

Officer-in-Charge of Shibpur Police Station Firoz Mia said they arrested Rubel after getting confirmation from the plaintiff. "There is no scope of confusion," he said.

Asked, he said they will take further steps after receiving the court order.
