Palli Bidyut worker stabbed to death

A hired worker of Palli Bidyut Samity was killed and two others were injured as one of their fellows allegedly attacked them over a trivial matter in Patuakhali yesterday.

Subsequently, police arrested one Kawsar in connection with the killing.

The deceased Zahirul, 21, was declared dead when taken to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital.

The injured -- Saiful, 23, and Shakib, 20 -- were taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal.

Md Masud, a lineman of the rural electrification board in Patuakhali, said the workers were going to cut tree branches to clear electricity lines like other days.

On the way, Kawsar and Zahirul had an altercation in a car in Basak Bazar area. At one stage, Kawsar stabbed him with a sharp weapon, he said.

Saiful and Shakib were injured as they tried to save him, said Masud.

Patuakhali Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim said legal action will be taken against the arrestee.

Contacted, Tushar Kanti Halder, general manager of Patuakhali Palli Bidyut Samity, said the workers are not their permanent employees. "They work and are paid on a per-day basis."
