One arrested for beating up municipality mayor in Chattogram

A man has been arrested on charge of beating up Chattogram's Banshkhali Municipality Mayor Selimul Haque Chowdhury.

Arrestee Belal Uddin (30) is from Banshkhali upazila, Kamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Banshkhali Police Station, told our Chattogram correspondent.

A case was filed and investigation is underway, the OC said.

"We are trying to arrest others involved with the incident," he added.

A video, posted on social media, showed that four to five men were beating up the mayor at the house of Hira Moni, organising secretary of Jubo Mohila League's Banshkhali unit, on January 18 night.

Selim said that a group of youths went to Hira Moni's house around 8:00pm on that day and attacked him.

He then called police and later they rescued him, he added.

Selim filed the case accusing four named and some unidentified people on January 19.
