Noakhali police constable detained, suspended after trying to steal auto-rickshaw
A police constable was apprehended by locals while trying to steal a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Noakhali's Companiganj upazila last night.
The incident took place in Bottola area of Companiganj's Char Fakira union around 10pm, reports our local correspondent.
The detainee was identified as Zia Uddin Parvez (23), a constable of Noakhali Police Lines.
Noakhali's Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle), Mohammad Akramul Hasan, said that Zia Uddin has been suspended from duty for stealing, and a committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
According to police and locals, Zia Uddin rented an auto-rickshaw from Bangla Bazar area around 9 pm. He later took control of the auto-rickshaw by throwing chili powder in the driver's eyes. While fleeing, he lost control of the auto-rickshaw and was involved in an accident in Muktijoddha Bazar area. Locals held Zia after the driver screamed and asked for help.
After hearing the driver narrate the ordeal, several members of a nearby army camp rushed to the scene and informed police. They recovered a police uniform from Zia's bag at the time.
Locals handed Zia over to Officer-in-Charge of Companiganj Police Station, Mohammad Sajjad Roman, around midnight.
