Nine held in connection with rape of schoolgirl
Police yesterday arrested nine people, including a girl, on charge of abetting and raping a schoolgirl from Narayanganj's Araihazar.
They were held after the victim's father filed a case against 10 people with Araihazar Police Station early yesterday, said Anisur Rahman Mollah, officer-in-charge of the station.
The arrestees are: Jahid, 20, Taijul, 19, Siam, 19, Robin, 23, Rifat, 20, Khairul, 22, Billal, 19, Nirab, 19, and a 14-year-old girl, who is a friend of the victim, said the OC.
Billal, Nirab, Khairul and the girl were accused in the case as they abetted the rapists, added the police officer, quoting the case statement.
The other accused Sabbir is on the run.
All the accused are from different villages in Araihazar upazila.
The victim, a seventh grader of a local school, went to visit Sinra area in Araihazar with one of her male and female friends on August 30, said the police official.
As it was getting dusk, some 10-12 youths caught them and drove her friends away, said the OC, adding that they then gang-raped her and fled the place when the girl became ill.
Locals rescued and sent her home after providing treatment at a local clinic, he said.
Filing of case was late as the victim's family was in fear of social stigma and the girl was ill, said the OC, quoting the father, a resident of Rupganj upazila.
Five of the arrestees -- Jahid, Taijul, Siam, Robin and Rifat -- gave confessional statements before a local court, said Court Inspector Asaduzzaman.
The court also set September 12 for remand hearing of three others, while the 14-year-old girl was sent to a juvenile correction centre, he added.
The victim was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for medical tests.
