Mitu Murder: Court rejects PBI’s final report against ex-SP Babul

A Chattogram court yesterday rejected the final report in Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder case submitted by the Police Bureau of Investigation.
In the report, her husband former SP Babul Akter, who filed the case, was implicated.
The Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnaz Rahman also asked for further probe into the case, said his lawyer Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury.
He told The Daily Star, "But the court did not say which agency will investigate the murder case further."
On September 27, Babul filed a no-confidence petition on the PBI's final report implicating him in the case. The court later set yesterday to deliver orders on Babul's plea and acceptance of PBI's report.
"As the court rejected PBI's report,Babul's petition has also been scrapped," said lawyer Iftekhar.
He said, "During the hearing, we informed the court that Babul Akter filed a case with Panchlaish Police Station in 2016, but a new case was filed just hours after the PBI submitted its final report, raising questions."
On May 16 this year, PBI submitted the final report in Mitu murder case filed by SP Babul, terming him the "mastermind".
Later in the day, Babul was shown arrested in another murder case filed by Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain with Panchlaish Police Station.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son Mahir to his school bus at the port city's GEC intersection.
After the incident, Babul lodged a case against three unidentified men with the Panchlaish Police Station.
Later, the case was taken over by PBI from DB of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
On May 11 this year, Chattogram PBI summoned Babul to its office for interrogation. He failed to give satisfactory answers to the detectives and was taken into PBI custody, said PBI officials.
