Member of ‘robber gang’ killed in mob beating
A member of an alleged gang of robbers was killed and another seriously injured in a mob beating in Manikganj's Shibalaya upazila early yesterday.
The deceased is Atoar Rahman Nayan, 35, of Binodpur village in Daulatpur upazila.
Injured Liton Sheikh, 35, of Mitora village in Sadar upazila, was undergoing treatment at Shibalaya Upazila Health Complex.
Locals said five to six members of the gang went to the home of one Atal Chakraborty's in Bakchar village around 3:00am. They entered the house by cutting through the tin wall next to the door.
Then they tied the hands and legs of Atal Chakraborty, his wife Shipra Rani Chakraborty, mother Geeta Rani Chakraborty and started beating them up.
Hearing their screams, neighbours rushed to the house andcaught two of the gang red-handed while they were looting gold ornaments and goods from the house. The rest managed to flee, the locals added.
Injured Atal, his wife and mother were admitted to Manikganj 250-bed General Hospital, said the hospital authorities.
Yakub Ali Mollah, member of ward-4 of local Mahadebpur union parishad, said villagers beat up the two "robbers" indiscriminately. Atoar died on the spot and Liton was wounded seriously.
On information, police recovered Atoar's body from the spot in the morning.
Liton was handed over to police.
Firoz Kabir, officer-in-charge of Shibalaya Police Station, however, said, "It was not a robbery. Three thieves went to the house to steal valuables. One of them was killed and another injured in a mass beating by locals.
"The incident is being investigated. Legal action will be taken in this regard."
