Nezam had purchased a land in Jalalabad area and was constructing a six-storey building on it. He used to come to the city every week to pay the workers as well as oversee the construction work, said Md Shahinuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station.
"Yesterday, Nezam came to the site for visit. After Asr prayer, he had complained of chest pain and later went to caretaker Hasan's room to take rest. Later, finding his phone switched off, Nezam's family members rushed to the site this morning and found his body," said the OC.
After the incident, the caretaker Hasan (30) has fled. His phone was found switched off.
Nezam's body was found in a garbage dump, with his hands and feet tied up. On information, police went to the spot and recovered the body, OC Shahinuzzaman said.
The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for autopsy, he also said.
"As per primary investigation, it seems that he was strangled to death. Also, injury marks were found on the victim's back," the OC said, adding that his cash and mobile phone are missing.
Police are investigating whether it was a planned murder or a case of extortion as the family said local goons earlier demanded money from them, he also said.
A murder case has been filed in this connection with Khulshi Police Station, the OC added.
