Man sentenced to death for rape, murder of 10-yr-old in N’ganj
A Narayanganj court today sentenced a man to death in a case filed for the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Rupganj upazila in 2006.
Narayanganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Nazmul Haq Shaymol announced the verdict in absence of the convict Md Nazimuddin as he is absconding, reports our local correspondent quoting Public Prosecutor Rakibuddin Ahmed.
The other two accused in the case, Ilias Mia and Shah Alam, were acquitted, said PP Rakibuddin
The victim's mother expressed satisfaction over the verdict and demanded that the verdict be implemented at the earliest.
The defendant's lawyer Adv Mobarak Hossain Selim said he will appeal against the verdict in the High Court.
According to the case documents, on January 13, 2006, the 10-year-old victim went missing on her way to a tailor shop in the upazila. The next day, her body was found in a bamboo shed in the Birab area.
Later her mother filed a case with Rupganj Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Asaduzzaman, the inspector of the court, said after three and a half years, on June 15, 2009, Inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Md Obaidullah submitted the charge sheet to the court accusing three people.
"During the trial of the case, 21 witnesses, including the plaintiff and the investigating officer, testified and based on evidence, the court sentenced one of the accused to death and acquitted the other two," he said.
