Man sentenced to death for double murder in Sherpur

A Sherpur court today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife and mother-in-law in 2015.
The convict is Md Ismail Hossain, 40, from Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh, reports our local correspondent.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of Sherpur Mohammad Taufiq Aziz delivered the verdict this afternoon.
The court also fined the convict Tk 50,000 for his crimes. Ismail was present at the court during the verdict.
Quoting the case statement, Public Prosecutor Chandan Kumar Pal said, Ismail went to the house of his in-laws at Kakorkandi village of Sherpur's Nalitabari upazila on September 26 in 2015.
Following an altercation over family affairs, Ismail attacked his wife Bilkis Akter with a sharp weapon and injured her critically. When Bilkis's mother Khaleda Begum and three other neighbours rushed to help Bilkis, Ismail also attacked them indiscriminately.
Locals caught Ismail while he tried to flee the scene and handed him over to the police. Later Bilkis and Khaleda died at a hospital.
Bilkis's brother Abdul Khaleque lodged a case with Nalitabari Police Station on the following day accusing Ismail.
Ismail later gave confessional statement before a court under Section-164. Police pressed charges accusing Ismail on January 10 in 2019.
After examining witnesses and evidence, the court handed down the verdict today.
