Man mistakenly kills another woman while attempting to murder ex-wife
A man yesterday stabbed a woman to death when he went to kill his former wife in Dhaka.
Sekul Mia (30) killed Ayesha Siddiqui (22) in Mohammadpur's Naboday Housing area.
Mohammadpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif said Sekul's wife divorced him four years ago. Later, she took Tk 5 lakh from Sekul while promising to marry again. But instead, she married another man a month ago which made Sekul upset. He then planned to kill her.
Sekul, according to his plan, went to Naboday Housing Area yesterday morning and started following his former wife, who was in a burqa, as she boarded a rickshaw.
At one stage, Sekul stopped a rickshaw suspecting that it was carrying his former wife. He started hitting the passenger of the rickshaw, who was also in a burqa, indiscriminately with scissors suspecting her as his former wife.
As the woman (Ayesha) fell from the rickshaw, Sekul saw his ex-wife sitting next to him in another rickshaw.
Later, Ayesha Siddiqui was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where she died around 4 pm yesterday, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Khan (assistant in-charge) of DMCH Police Outpost told The Daily Star.
"The victim had three injuries on her back. Doctors took her to the operating theatre in the afternoon. She later died at the post-operative care after the operation," he said.
"Ayesha lived at Adabar Nabinagar housing area with her husband and worked at Signest Group Garments at the Mohammadpur Embankment. Her husband Rubel works as an electrician in Dhaka Udyan," her sister Khaleda Akhter told The Daily Star.
"Sekul was detained by the mob and was handed over to police. There was another man with him who fled the scene," said the OC.
"Sekul said he had mistaken Ayesha as his ex-wife, as both of them were wearing burqa," added OC Abdul Latif.
"The deceased's relatives will file a murder case with the police station. Her body has been kept in the morgue for an autopsy," he also said.
