Man gets death for killing wife for dowry
A Dhaka tribunal today sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry in the city's Kadamtali area in March 2018.
Judge Mosammat Roksana Begum Happy of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 of Dhaka handed down the sentence in presence of the convict, Md Ripon Gazi, at the court.
After the verdict, the tribunal sent the convict to Dhaka Central Jail in Keranaiganj with a conviction warrant.
The death-row convict can appeal with the High Court challenging the judgment within 60 days from the day of receipt of judgment copy.
Earlier, the prosecution and the defence completed their arguments and the tribunal recorded statements of 11 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
According to the case statement, Ripon Gazi of Kadamtali tortured his wife Shiuly Akhter to death for Tk 100,000 dowry on Meraznagar Madrasa Road anytime between March 6 and 7 of 2018.
Following the incident, victim's father Monir Hossain filed a case against Ripon Gazi with Kadamtali Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
After arrest, Ripon Gazi confessed to killing his wife over demanding Tk 100,000 as dowry.
After an investigation, police submitted a charge sheet to the Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on September 20 of 2018.
