Man driving garbage truck not DSCC worker, didn’t have licence: Police

A man who worked as a cleaner was behind the wheel of Dhaka South City Corporation's garbage truck (DSCC) which hit and killed Notre Dame College student Nayeem yesterday.
The cleaner Russel Khan took the keys of the vehicle from DSCC driver Md Harun and took it out from Sayedabad area of Dhaka.
Abdul Ahad, deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division police, disclose the findings today.
Police, with the support of passers-by, detained Russel from near the Awami League office in Gulistan while he and two other cleaners -- Golam Rabbani and Belal -- were trying to flee from the truck after the hit-and-run around 11:30am yesterday.
"After interrogating Russel and checking the documents of the truck, we have come to know that driver Harun is in charge of the DSCC vehicle. He was not in the truck at the time of the incident," said the police official.
Police are now searching for Harun and he would be arrested soon, he said, adding, "We would interrogate him to find out why he gave the keys to Russel."
He further said that Russel is not a worker of the city corporation.
During interrogation, Russel informed that his relatives worked at Dhaka South City Corporation and through their connection, he used to work as a cleaner, said Ahad.
Russel was driving the vehicle, and he did not have any driving license.
In reply to a query, DC Ahad said that this was not the first time Russel had driven the vehicle. "It is Harun who gave the keys to Russel."
Police said that Nayeem Hasan (18), a humanities student of Notre Dame College, was crossing the road around 11:20am at Gulistan Bangabandhu roundabout when the garbage truck of DSCC hit him.
Locals rescued Nayeem and rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors pronounced him dead.
Police confiscated the garbage truck and the body was handed over to his family after inquest and autopsy.
Victim's father Shah Alam has filed a case in this regard.
