Man dies in police custody after being detained for questioning
A man died in police custody early today (September 27, 2022) hours after he was detained for interrogation in connection with a murder in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail.
The deceased was identified as Lebu Miah (55), son of Bahar Uddin of Banshtoil village, our Tangail correspondent reports quoting Sheikh Abu Saleh Masud Karam, officer-in-charge of Mirzapur Police Station.
Lebu Miah died by suicide in lock-up some time in the early hours today, claimed the police official.
Lebu's wife Aleya Begum alleged that her husband was tortured to death in the police custody.
OC Masud Karam said a woman named Sakhina Akhter, 40, was found dead at her home in Banshtoil village yesterday noon. Police detained Sakhina's ex-husband Mofizur Rahman and Lebu Miah for questioning in this regard. They were kept in two separate rooms of the police station.
Lebu Mia died by suicide by hanging himself from the ventilator in the room, the OC said.
The body was sent to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy this morning, the OC said, adding that an unnatural death case was filed in this connection.
The family members of the deceased and the locals started protesting the death of Lebu Miah by blocking the Gorai-Sakhipur road from 2pm, said witnesses.
The protest was going on till filing of this report at 3pm.
Shariful Islam, additional superintendent of Tangail, told this correspondent that a process to form a probe committee is underway to investigate the incident.
