Killing of Shaheen: Rab claims he was shot dead by drug traffickers

Rapid Action Battalion yesterday claimed that alleged drug dealer Shaheen Mia alias City Shahin was killed after being shot by drug traffickers in Narayangan's Chonpara on Thursday.

The elite force made the claim in the statement of a case, filed by Md Ashrafuzzaman, inspector of Rab-1, with Rupganj Police Station, over the killing.

AFM Sayed, officer-in-charge of the police station, said the Rab accused unidentified drug traffickers in the case. Two more cases were filed over recovery of arms and drugs, he added.

The Rab launched a drive in Chonpara slum on Thursday. During the drive, Shaheen was killed in a "gunfight".

The deceased was accused in 23 cases.

Rahul Rahman Kamal, elder brother of Shaheen, claimed that four people dragged his brother to Balurmat and shot him dead.

However, Rab-1 Commanding Officer Lt Col Abdullah Al Momen on Thursday said Shaheen was shot near Chonpara's ward-1 around 2:00pm, when a team from the unit raided the area.

"Sensing the presence of Rab, Shaheen and his associates opened fire on our men. They also threw brickbats at the Rab team. As Rab returned fire in self-defence, Shaheen collapsed. His associates, however, fled," said Momen.
