Kamrangirchar double murder: Man confesses to killing his wife, daughter
A man today confessed to killing his wife and daughter at their Noagaon residence in the city's Kamrangirchar area and tried to die by suicide after the killings on Saturday.
Police recovered the bodies of Fulbashi Rani (35), wife of day-labourer Mukhendra Chandra Das, and their 11-year-old daughter Sumi Rani at their house on Saturday morning and sent them to Mitford hospital morgue for autopsy. There were black marks on the necks of the victims, police said.
Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kamrangirchar Police Station said Mukhendra gave a statement before a Dhaka court today confessing that he strangled his wife and daughter to death.
He first strangled his wife to death and then took insecticide. He then killed his younger daughter. When he attempted to strangle his elder daughter Jhuma Rani, she got up and cried for help prompting locals to nab Mukhendra, the OC said.
Police picked up Mukhendra and Jhuma for interrogation while Fulbashi's sister filed a murder case with Kamrangirchar Police Station following the recovery of the bodies.
The OC also said Mukhendra's family was going through severe financial hardship. He sold his wife's gold ornaments two years ago for Tk 30,000 and gave the money to his maternal uncle to go abroad. But he could neither go abroad nor get the money back which often led to arguments between the couple, the OC added.
Unemployed Mukhendra was struggling to run his family and was becoming burdened with loan. In the meantime, he promised to return Tk 1000 to his wife, but failed to do so which led to a quarrel the day before Mukhendra killed his wife and the daughter, the OC said.
Mukhendra was mostly unemployed since the first lockdown was imposed last year.
