Jubo Dal leader shown arrested after 3 days: family
A local Jubo Dal leader, who was picked up from near his village house in Raozan upazila of Chattogram on October 16, was shown arrested by police on October 19 for an alleged "robbery attempt carrying firearms", family members alleged today.
Police, however, denied the family claim over the arrest of Jane Alam, 46, assistant communication affairs secretary of Chattogram district Jubo Dal, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent.
Runa Akhter, wife of Jane Alam, told The Daily Star today that her husband is a Qatar expatriate and recently returned to Bangladesh.
"My husband went to our village house in Raozan to release fish fry in a local pond. When he was coming back to the Chattogram's Kazir Dewri on his motorcycle, police held him on the morning of October 16 from Noapara area," said Runa.
She said hearing the news, she and her elder son went to Noapara police box where police personnel told them that her husband was taken to Raozan Police Station.
"Later I rushed to Roazan Police Station but the on-duty police officers refused to talk about my husband and drove us out," she alleged.
"The following day, I sent several people to know his whereabouts but found nothing. After three days, on Thursday evening (October 19), we were informed that Jane Alam was arrested in an robbery attempt case," she said.
He was implicated in a fake and false case by police, alleged Runa.
In the same case, police also accused a BNP leader Firoz Ahmed, who has been in Saudi Arabia for performing Umrah since October 4, raising many questions. The Daily Star on Saturday published a report over Firoz.
According to the case statement, three people -- Jane Alam, 46, Abdullah Al Khakon, 38, and Abu Bakkar Siddique Babu, 28, -- were caught red-handed by police early Thursday (October 19) in Raozan's Thakurpara village when they were preparing to commit a robbery.
Police also recovered two locally made firearms, two bullets, two machetes, and a cutter from their possession, it said.
Six others -- Md Shah Alam, Md Yousuf Talukdar, Jane Alam, Lokman, Md Jasim, and Firoz Ahmed -- were in the robbery gang. But they managed to flee during the police drive, added the case statement.
Firoz is joint convener of Raozan upazila BNP while Yusuf is the joint secretary of Chattogram district (north unit) Swechchhasebak Dal, locals and party sources said.
Raozan Police Station Sub-inspector Tutan Mozumdar, who arrested Alam and two others along with firearms, told The Daily Star, "The claim of the family member is not true. We arrested him red-handed. The incident is true."
Abu Tyeb Md Arif, additional superintendent of police of Chattogram special branch, told The Daily Star, "We didn't receive any complaint from the family members. If anyone lodges any complaint, we will investigate it."
