Journo dies after being assaulted 'over a report'
The Jamalpur district correspondent of Banglanews24.com, who was assaulted allegedly by the followers of a local union parishad chairman last night, died at a hospital in Mymensingh this afternoon.
Golam Rabbani Nadim, 42, also the Bakshiganj upazila correspondent of Ekattor TV, breathed his last around 2:30pm while being treated at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Jakiul Islam, deputy director of the hospital, told The Daily Star.
Nadim was also the vice-president of Jamalpur Online Journalists.
He was attacked for reporting on Mahmudul Alam, chairman of Sadhurpara union parishad of Bakshiganj upazila, his family members and colleagues alleged.
Mahmudul Alam rejected the allegations and said he had no dispute with Nadim.
Mahmudul, also general secretary of Sadhurpara union Awami League, filed a case against Nadim and another journalist under the Digital Security Act with Mymensingh Cyber Tribunal on May 14, four days after Nadim's report was published on Banglanews24.com.
Recently, the cyber tribunal summarily dismissed the case.
Nadim and the other journalist came to know about the case dismissal yesterday, hours before he was attacked, according to his family and sources at the court.
Mohammad Sohel Rana, officer-in-charge of Bakshiganj Police Station, said they have so far detained three men in connection with the killing.
Police are investigating the murder. Filing of a case is underway, he said.
Witnesses said some people attacked Nadim at Bakshiganj Bazar area while he was returning home around 10:00pm yesterday.
Locals took him to Bakshiganj Upazila Health Complex. Later, he was transferred to Jamalpur General Hospital for better treatment. As his condition deteriorated there, he was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Shahidur Rahman, a doctor of Jamalpur General Hospital, said Nadim was admitted with serious head injuries.
Nadim's wife Monira Begum said UP Chairman Mahmudul Alam's men attacked Nadim and she demanded exemplary punishment for them.
"After publishing a news against the chairman, he [the chairman] has been harassing Nadim," she said.
