Filed case as those helping SUST protests with money are Jamaat-Shibir men: Sylhet Tanti League leader
A case has been filed against 145 unidentified people and the detained five former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology for donating money to demonstrating students on campus demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor.
Talking to The Daily Star over telephone this noon, Sujat Ahmed Layek, organising secretary of Bangladesh Tanti League's Sylhet unit, said that he filed the case with Jalalabad Police Station.
Layek said, "Those who are helping the demonstrating students with money are Jamaat-Shibir men. It seems that Jamaat-Shibir have hand in the demonstration. The protesting students are being encouraged with money. So, I have filed the case as a conscious citizen."
When asked if he will file a case against former SUST Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal as he said he would pay Tk 10,000 to the protesting students, Layek said, "I don't know whether Sir (Zafar Iqbal) donated any money."
Sujon Debnath, general secretary of Sylhet Tanti League, told The Daily Star that that no decision was made from the party to file the case. Layek filed the case on his own.
He said the party will not bear the responsibility. Tanti League's Sylhet president knows nothing about the case either, he added.
On Monday, the Criminal Investigation Department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained five former SUST students for donating money to demonstrating students on campus.
Meanwhile, 28 SUST students ended their "hunger strike until death" after 163 hours, at 10:20am today -- at the request of renowned writer and former SUST Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal. Twenty-three students were fasting since 2:50 pm last Wednesday (January 19), with five others joined later on Sunday and Monday, reports our Sylhet correspondent.
