Female councillor in Sherpur beaten up for 'protesting drug peddling', 1 arrested
A female councillor of Sherpur municipality was beaten up allegedly for protesting drug peddling in her neighbourhood.
Nazma Begum, 35, is currently being treated at Sherpur General Hospital. The incident occurred in Digharpar area of Sherpur municipality yesterday.
The victim's father Harunur Rashid filed a case with Sherpur Sadar Police Station accusing seven people in this connection on Friday night, said Basir Ahmed Badal, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Police arrested Shahidul Islam, 42, the prime accused in the case today.
Quoting the case statement, the OC said Nazma, also panel mayor, informed municipality Mayor Golam Mohammad Kibria about drug peddling in her locality a few days ago. The mayor later informed police about the issue and police paid a visit to the area on Thursday.
The drug peddlers were allegedly angered by the police visit after which they started verbally abusing Nazma and her family members.
They went to Nazma's house and assaulted her yesterday morning, according to the case statement.
When Nazma's father rushed to the spot, they also beat him up.
Condemning the attack, Mayor Kibria demanded immediate arrest of all accused.
